After a few days of warming up in Bangkok our vacation would really start in beautiful Koh Lanta, an island in Krabi where you can only go from the Pier in Krabi Town with the pound. The trip from Bangkok is easy to do by plane and taxi, in the end it took almost 7 hours. And secretly traveling through such a country is not so bad, as there are so many beautiful things to see along the way.
We booked a private hotel with swimming pool at Alanta Villa for the entire week. A spacious park where they offer various villas, suitable for couples, families or even several families. We received an upgrade because it was still low season and there were several cottages available.
Koh Lanta is known for its beautiful beaches and local food culture. Something that we normally prefer when we are traveling. Although nowadays you can’t avoid it almost, but luckily there are still places where you can escape from the big tourism.
Because we didn’t want to move too much within two and a half weeks, we chose to book an accommodation at a central location from where we could easily plan activities in the nearby area.
For example, the Villa where we stayed was less than 10 minutes’ walk from Phra Ae Beach. A spacious beach where there is a lot to offer. For example, there are plenty of restaurants where you can’t only enjoy a delicious meal or drink a cocktail, but also rent a beach bed with umbrella at a low rate. Perfect if you want to stay a little longer.
If you need a massage, meditation or yoga session, you can step in at any time of the day in one of the many nearby health and spa resorts. There are also opportunities to use water sports facilities such as windsurfing, sub boarding and kayaking. Also really nice when you’re with children.
In addition to well-known beaches, the island also has a few more remote places, where you can fully unwind from others and enjoy the more rugged nature. We recommend the beach at the head of the island, Ao Nui Bay, not completely unknown but more hidden and difficult to reach.
Within walking distance from the beach there is a great restaurant with a beautiful high view over sea.
However, keep in mind that there are monkeys on the edge of the jungle. In groups they look after everything that is eatable and drinkable. They’re not that dangerous, they don’t just attack you, but you also don’t have to challenge and approach them. Certainly not when there are baby monkeys, as the older family members protect them and can become hostile.
Koh Lanta is an ideal destination to spend a week. The versatility of the island ensures that you will not be bored. There are plenty of activities to plan for young and old, whether you like jungle, wildlife, the sea, culture or good food. There is a lot to do and experience.
The villa also provided a perfect balance, because the peace and space that you have there is certainly something that you can enjoy even more if you plan an activity every day outside the door. And you must also remember that it can be still very hot, so reading a book with a cocktail in the hand next to the pool is also nice on certain times.
The days flew by and we had such a wonderful time, but on the other hand we were also looking forward to the next destination. We wanted to see more of Thailand, and so after a good week we returned to Krabi where we would spent our second part of the trip in: Ao Nang. A totally different environment, but also definitely worth a visit.
